Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less was Jeffrey Archer's first novel, first published in 1976. It was said to have been inspired by Archer's real-life experience of near-bankruptcy.
The plot is simple: four wealthy men – a doctor, an earl, a professor, and an art dealer - from different business and career background find themselves financially broke, manipulated by a professional embezzler, a stock swindler, Harvey. The four men unite and join forces to recover their fortunes from Metcalfe. However, as the four are inherently honest, they are determined as ever to recover their loot only in exact amount. That goes to saying: "Not a penny more, not a penny less." The novel might be short but certainly not amiss with that Jeffrey Archer touch of ingenuity and mastery in storytelling. It is complete with humour, romance and interesting twists.
This book was made into a two-part TV movie, just as exciting to watch.
